Platform

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Midway up the structure, we need to have a platform to support the power systems. This platform can also stiffen the structure serving transfer tension and compression forces around the helix. I wanted it to be able to support several hundred lbs. of weight that a person and a generator might add up to. At the same time, we wanted it to be light enough to hoist into place and secure without a lot of trouble. When in place, it can be entirely supported by the helix.

Design

The current design is to arrange 2 x 4s in an extended 6 pointed star configuration. The 2 x 4s will be joined by cross lapped joints, so that when assembled the tops of the 2 x 4s will make a flat surface for 3/4″ plywood to screw into. Every other board end on the outer ring will be drilled through so that a rope passed through it can be lashed to a two pole interface on the helix.
